The Protestant Theological University (PThU) in The Netherlands specializes in the theological study of the Christian Faith. The University is rooted in the protestant tradition and is the official academic training institute of the clergy of the Protestant Church in The Netherlands (PKN).

The University currently has three locations and offers a Master of Theology in Utrecht and Leiden, and a Bachelor and several Masters of Theology in Kampen. The Seminary for Continuing Education, located in Doorn, The Protestant Theological University recently announced the intention to move the PThU from Utrecht, Kampen and Leiden to Amsterdam and Groningen in the course of 2012. This intention has been approved by the Synod of the Protestant Church in the Netherlands.

FAQ's about the move

The transition of the University to Amsterdam and Groningen will be made gradually in the next two years, to be completed in September 2012. This major decision and the upcoming move has raised some questions by current and potential students, and by the international partners of PThU.

Research

The PThU has three research programmes: Sources, Beliefs and Practices.

  • Sources – The research programme of Biblical studies and Church history deals with Sources of Christianity and Judaism and in particular the interaction between these sources and religious communities over the course of time.

  • Practices - The research is directed at Practices of Faith in churches and Christian congregations, in practices of art, civil religion, emerging practices and others.

There are also several research institutes and projects that operate on a relatively selfsufficient level.

Enrolment in Studielink

Foreign students who wish to enroll in the one-year In-depth Master should apply to the International Office of the PThU. Their registration will be transferred by the PThU to Studielink during the introductory period. Enrolment will be continued through Studielink.

The university library’s collection consists of over 150.000 booktitles. In addition the library subscribes to a large number of national and international journals in various languages.
